Dear KIPP Indy Families,

We condemn the senseless killings of Dreasjon Reed, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, as well as countless other Black men, women, and children who have lost their lives as a direct result of racist violence. In talking with staff, students, and families over the past several weeks, we know that there is an overwhelming sense of anguish, frustration, and uncertainty connected to the fact that systemic racism in our community has once again led to Black lives being unjustly taken too soon. This collective sense of heartbreak and anger is beyond difficult, and while no words can adequately address the pain or trauma of this moment we want you to know that we see, love and value you and all of our students.

KIPP Indy is deeply committed to fighting against systemic racism, police brutality, white supremacy, and the dehumanization of Black lives. We know that these forces are very real in Indianapolis, and we believe that our schools have a responsibility to actively and consistently advocate for policies both in our city and in our schools that dismantle racism and remove unjust barriers for our students and community.

In partnership with you, we are committed to providing our students with opportunities to learn about and process the history and current reality of racism in our country, and to also empower them with specific avenues to amplify their voices and leadership. In the last two weeks, many students have participated in conversations to share their reactions to the recent racial violence, and they have also had the opportunity to engage in an advocacy campaign in support of the implementation of police body cameras. Students’ voices have been powerful and we are committed to continuing to ensure they have these spaces to process, reflect, and express themselves.

We deeply value your perspective and are committed to listening and responding as we continue to partner together. If there is anything we can do to be supportive or advocate together during this time, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Our promise to every student and family is to create joyful, safe, academically excellent schools that empower our students to lead a life of choice and ultimately build a more just world. We love and appreciate you, and are committed to continuing to partner with you and your student through this challenging time.

Sincerely,
