KIPP Through College

Without KIPP Indy and KIPP Through College, I would not be where I am in the college planning process. I have learned how to research colleges to make sure a school is a great fit for me, and I have gone on multiple college visits that help me continue to build and edit my college wish list. I know a college education will get me on the path I want to be on, no matter what career I decide.

KIPP Indy Alumna

To and Through

The vision of KIPP Through College (KTC) is to prepare our students and alumni with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to matriculate to and complete college. With robust programming from the time students are in kindergarten through the time they graduate college, KTC prepares our students and alumni to be ready to not only succeed in college, but to ultimately be prepared to enter the global workforce. KTC concentrates on the following activities:

As students enroll at KIPP Indy, we work with them and their families to apply to 21st Century Scholars, an Indiana-based program that provides scholarships to successful low-income high school graduates. In addition, research shows that students whose families save for college, regardless of the amount, are more likely to go to college. Therefore, we work with families to establish college savings funds.

Every seventh and eighth grade student participates in a weekly class that covers topics directly related to the skills needed for high school success. Topics include self-advocacy, time management, organization, and professionalism.

KTC staff members work closely with students and families to expose them to a wide range of high school options with the ultimate goal of preparing students to select a high school that will enable them to succeed. KTC accompanies students on high school shadow days, provides application support, and helps students access financial information and scholarships when necessary.

KTC supports students to make a smooth transition from their eighth grade year to their ninth grade year at a local high school. KTC offers extensive programming during students’ last month of their eighth grade year to ensure they are prepared from an academic, logistical, and cultural perspective. In addition, research shows that the performance and habits formed during the first months of high school is one of the strongest predictors of success. Therefore, KTC checks in with and provides differentiated support to every ninth grade student during their first month of high school.

During the end of their eighth grade year, students create individual High School Success Plans that outline specific academic and extracurricular goals. KTC uses these plans to guide individual conversations with all of our alumni in high school to ensure they are on track to graduate and are receiving the academic and social support they need to be successful. In addition, KTC hosts a class reunion each semester and visits each high school once a year.

KTC offers all of our 230 alumni currently in high school access to rigorous programming to help prepare for the ACT and SAT, workshops that support students and families in the financial aid process, as well as KTC-led college visits. Workshops occur 2-4 times per semester.

KTC supports alumni and families in every step of the college application and enrollment process. This occurs regularly throughout the student’s senior year of high school. Meetings with students take place as needed with at least a one-on-one meeting every month. In college, advisors continue to provide support to alumni, whether virtually or in person. This support comes in the form of academic and career planning, in addition to ongoing financial aid support.
