TRANSPORTATION FAQ

Does KIPP Indy Public Schools provide transportation?

Yes. We provide the same level of service as Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS).

How are bus stops and routes determined? IPS does all of our routing. Transportation is determined by home address. For those eligible, all bus stops shall be within .3 mile of a student’s home for elementary and middle school students and .7 mile for high school students.

I live out of the district. Am I eligible for transportation?

No. If you reside outside of IPS boundaries, you will not be eligible for a bus. You can still attend KIPP but will be responsible for providing your own transportation.

I live outside of the enrollment zones for KIPP. Am I eligible for transportation?

No. Starting in 2024-2025, IPS introduced four enrollment zones across the district. In order to be eligible for transportation to and from KIPP, you must reside in enrollment zone 2 or 3. You can still attend KIPP if you live in zone 1 or 4 but will be responsible for providing your own transportation.

Does my child have to use the same stop in the morning and afternoon?

Yes. Our policy is that a student is assigned to one bus and one stop.

How early should my student be at the bus stop?

Students are expected to arrive at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to the designated pickup time. If the bus comes during this time, it will not wait around until the designated picked pick-up time.

What do I do if the bus is late?

Weather, traffic, driver absenteeism, maintenance difficulties, and unforeseen incidents are responsible for delays in the arrival of school buses in the morning and afternoon. We do our best to communicate delays as soon as we find out about them. You can check the status of your student’s bus by calling First Student dispatch at 317-449-0796. You will need to know your student’s bus number.

Do I have to be at my child’s stop when he/she is dropped off?

No, you do not have to be present. However, we strongly encourage this, especially for our younger students. Since IPS provides our transportation, we adhere to their policy. The driver will drop off a student with or without an adult present regardless of grade level. We do our best to communicate any delays that might affect drop-off times. Sometimes this is out of our control.

The bus passes my house on the way to stop up the street. Why can't it just stop and pick up my student at home?

Please remember that we transport approximately 1,000 students every day, so it is impossible to provide door-to-door service to everyone, and do it in a timely manner. It is more efficient to pick up several students in one stop, usually at a corner or other mid-way point for the students.

If I have concerns about behavior on the bus, who should I contact?

a. Grades K-5 Unite Office of Student Services at 317-771-7421.

b. Grades 6-8 KICP Office of Student Services at 317-771-0176.

c. Grades 9-11 Legacy Office of Student Services at 317-457-4370

What do I do if my child normally rides the bus but needs to be a car rider or stay for an afterschool activity one day?

Call the front office at 317-547-5477 and select the transportation option. You will need to leave a message by 12:00PM. If your request isn’t received by the cutoff, it will not be honored for that day. Communicating this change through your student’s teacher will not be accepted either, as teaching is their main responsibility, so they are not expected to have to communicate this to the front office.

Who should I contact concerning an address change or transportation concern?

Call the front office at 317-547-5477 and select the transportation option to leave a message. It takes 3-5 business days to get your bus stop changed due to an address change. Someone from the school will follow up with the new stop information via ParentSquare.
